Mount Nelson is another trail runners’ dream, but perhaps has often been hidden in plain sight. The open forests are inviting and a good mix of natural single track and fire trails. The courses are speedy, and you can enjoy a unique view of Nipaluna/Hobart, and the Mountain from Troglydate Track.

The Enduro (12.5km) course enjoys an epic loop in Bicentennial Park, and then jumps over the road for a lap around even more amazing, and lesser-trodden trails around Hobart College. The Sport (6km) course enjoys that same epic loop around Bicentennial Park, and our Taster 3km course still captures the true essence of Mt Nelson, while keeping the distance and elevation in check!

We’ve been wanting to come out here for some time now, and it’s taken a few years to get what we think are the most spectacular courses at Mt Nelson. We reckon it’s been worth the wait, and we hope you agree.

A few of the trails in our courses have Rialannah in their name. Rialannah is one of several different spellings for an Aboriginal word translated variously as ‘air’, ‘wind’, ‘squall’. The name has no historic or linguistic association with Mt Nelson. Rialannah was an earlier name assigned to Mt Nelson and was removed in the 1950s.

Kriwalayti pronounced (kree wah lie tee) is the original name for Mt Nelson told by Wurati, a Nununi man from Bruny Island to George Augustus Robinson in January 1831 when he accompanied Robinson as a guide in southern Tasmania. Both Bruny Island and Mt Nelson lie in the territory of the south-eastern language group. It is now in palawa kani spelling.
